Lactobacillus fermentum

An antioxidant-producing probiotic strain that supports upper respiratory tract health, endurance, and vaginal defense.

What it is

Lactobacillus fermentum (Limosilactobacillus fermentum) is a heterofermentative lactic acid bacterium present in human mucosal surfaces, breast milk, and fermented botanicals. Produced commercially via liquid fermentation and lyophilisation, L. fermentum is notable for expressing potent antioxidant enzyme systems, such as superoxide dismutase. In Velobiotics products, L. fermentum is microencapsulated using patented MEP technology, protecting cell membranes from stomach acid degradation to ensure targeted release in the intestinal lumen.

Lactobacillus fermentum enhances multi-strain probiotic formulas through its heterofermentative metabolism, generating lactic acid, ethanol, carbon dioxide, and short-chain fatty acids. These metabolites lower intestinal pH and inhibit pathogenic biofilm formation, benefiting companion strains like Bifidobacterium bifidum and Lactobacillus acidophilus. L. fermentum's endogenous glutathione and superoxide dismutase lower oxidative redox potential in the gut lumen, creating an ideal anaerobic environment for oxygen-sensitive Bifidobacteria. Evidence: strong

Lactobacillus fermentum is safe and well tolerated in clinical populations including infants, pregnant women, and competitive athletes. No major safety concerns or drug interactions have been identified.
