What it is
Zeaxanthin is a structural isomer of lutein and a non-provitamin A xanthophyll carotenoid isolated commercially from marigold flowers (Tagetes erecta) or paprika. In dietary supplements, it is provided as free zeaxanthin or meso-zeaxanthin in oil-based softgels or beadlets. Zeaxanthin selectively concentrates in the central fovea of the retinal macula lutea, providing targeted optical filtration of high-energy blue wavelengths and inhibiting light-induced singlet oxygen generation.
